Cubs 20, at REBL Diamondbacks 12
Game 1: Cubs (20) vs. Diamondbacks (12)
The Cubs were looking to extend their winning streak in the early morning
fog at Dan Foley Park in Vallejo. Javier Barazza made his first start of
the year for the Cubs and threw five solid innings to make his first start
also his first win. Jim Grebenc finished the game for Barazza, throwing the
final three innings before the game was called because of time after the
eighth inning.
The Diamondbacks took advantage of sloppy Cubs defense to keep in the game
but the Cubs sticks came to life today and wouldn't let up. The Cubs one
and two spots, occupied by short-stop Cole Filipek and Center-fielder Matt
Nelson respectively, combined to score six of the Cubs runs and drive in
six. Filipek went 3 for 5 with two doubles, a stolen base, and four runs
batted in. Nelson also went 3 for 5 with a double and a walk and drove in
two. Jim Grebenc also kept the pressure on by going 1 for 2 with three
walks. Final score, Cubs 20 - Diamondbacks 12.
