Cubs 13, at Giants 7
The afternoon game of the double-header turned out to be as wild as the first. The Cubs sent Doug Zeman to the mound looking to secure a sweep of the Giants while the G-men sent manager Jesse Johannesen to the hill.
The Giants plated a run in the first on a walk and a double and Johannesen was cruising through the Cubs line-up, inducing a lot of weak flys and ground-outs. The Cubs finally evened the score up at one in the fourth courtesy of a Lex Robins solo homer. Meanwhile, Zeman settled down after the first inning and got locked into doing what he does best - putting up zeroes and Ks. After witnessing a slug-fest in the first game, this contest was turning into a tight pitcher's dual.
The Cubs scored another run in the sixth and another in the seventh to take a 3-1 lead. But the Giants rallied in the eighth and scored another run bringing the score to 3-2 and getting everyone on the edge of their seats. But the ninth would find the Giant's pitcher, who had relieved Johannesen in the fifth and throwing superbly since, in a heap of trouble from the get-go.
After walking the bases loaded, the Giants were going to have to deal with Doug Zeman, up to the plate with no outs and looking to give himself and his team some breathing room. After working the count to 2-0, Zeman sat on the next offering, taking the ball to deep left center and out of the park. The grand-slam brought the score to 7-2 and looked to secure the Cubs second victory of the day.
With a five run cushion, the Cubs elected to go to their bull-pen to get lefty, Mike Cazares, some work in the ninth. But things were not destined to go so smoothly. The Giants showed some real heart and came out swinging in the bottom of the ninth, scoring five runs off of Cazares on five hits and one walk, tieing the score up at 7. With two outs and the lead run on second, the Cubs went to their bull-pen looking for that elusive final out. The knuckle-baller Hamilton Arendsen came on, walking the first batter he faced but then getting the next batter to fly-out to center, sending the game into extra innings.
Unfortunately, for the Giants, a thin bull-pen would not be able to outlast the Cubs on-slaught. The 10th inning found the Cubbies scoring six more runs, capped off by a bases loaded, bases clearing two-out triple by Hamilton Arendsen. Arendsen, came out in the bottom of the 10th and shut the door on the Giants, ending the game with a strike-out.
Despite another outstanding performance by Zeman, who went eight innings, striking out 12, and giving up only four hits and two earned runs, he would not get the win. But, the Cubs did get the win, bringing their undefeated record to 8-0.
