Cubs 17, REBL Diamondbacks 7 June 28, 2003, 2:00 PM Game Recap
Cubs 17, REBL Diamondbacks 7
The afternoon game saw another exciting match-up as the D'backs down again, staged a late inning come-back. With Ari Zagaris on the hill for the Cubs, things looked like they were in the bag. Zagaris was dealing for the Cubs, striking out 9 through the first five. With the Cubs up 4-1, fueled by a four run second inning, featuring a two run blast off the bat of Jim Grebenc, things looked like a sure bet. But again, the D'backs refused to die as their pitcher was keeping the game close throwing up zeroes in the first, third, fourth, and the fifth.
But in the sixth, the Cubs bats came to live again, as they plated four, highlighted by a long, two-run shot to left by Lex Robins and Jim Grebenc's second two run shot of the day two batters after Robins. The Cubs put up two more in the seventh and the D'backs answered with two of their own in the bottom half of the seventh, making the score 10-3. Zagaris was still on for the Cubs going into the eighth but after some shotty defense play by the Cubs, the D'backs were able to push four runs across and making the Cubs get a little antsy after witnessing the late inning come-back in the first game. The Cubs went to their bull-pen with two-outs and the bases-loaded and this time, number four batter Moller stroked a bases clearing triple off the first pitch he saw from reliever Jesse Zitrin, bringing the score to 10-7. But Zitrin induced a fly-out to center to end the inning.
In the ninth, the Cubs put the game out of reach plating seven to bring the score to 17-7 and Zitrin finished the game off with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.
