Cubs 9, Mudhens 8 July 12, 2003, 2:00 PM Game Recap
Cubs 9, Mudhens 8
After suffering their first loss of the season in the morning game to the Mudhens, the Cubs were looking to enact a little revenge. The Cubbies sent Doug Zeman to mound to try and keep the potent Mudhen line-up in check and hope that their bats could get going.
The game started off on a good note as Cubs short-stop, Cole FIlipek, led off with a double. Center Fielder Eli Kollman then stepped in and launched a two run shot to left center for his fourth home-run of the year and a 2-0 Cubs lead.
The two clubs traded runs on and off and at the end of four, the score stood at 4-4. In the fifth the Cubs scored two more on a Doug Zeman single and a Lex Robins sacrifice fly bringing the score to 6-4. Zeman then got to dealing and threw zeroes up in the fifth and sixth. The Cubs put another run up in the seventh and the Mudhen's scored two more in their half of the seventh to make the score 7-6 Cubs.
In the eighth the Cubs could do nothing at the plate and sent Zeman back out to the hill in the bottom half. After walking one and giving up a base hit, the Cubs went to their pen with one out and men on second and first. Jim Grebenc came on in relief and got the second out on a fly to center field that advanced the runner to third. Then with two strikes on the next batter, a passed ball scored the tying run for the Mudhens. Grebenc struck out the batter on the very next pitch to end the inning.
The ninth would see neither team do anything and therefore push the game into extra innings with the score tied at 7-7. In the top of the tenth, the Cubs were able to push two runs across on a Hamilton Arendsen sac fly and a Javier Barraza two out single bringing the score to 9-7. That second run would prove to be the game winner as the Mudhens scored one in their half of the 10th but stranded the tying run on second base.
Despite another stellar performance, where he went 8 1/3 innings giving up only three earned runs on seven hits, Zeman would get his third no decision in a row, but still the Cubs were happy to leave Menlo Park with a split after a long day at the yard.
