Giants 6, Astros 5 July 26, 2003, 2:00 PM Game Recap
Giants 6, Astros 5
This game was scoreless through 4. The Giants were hitless. After the Astros plated a run in the 5th, the Giants got the run right back (aided by an Astro error) on a bases loaded walk by Dana Underwood. In the 7th, the Giants took a 4-1 lead without a basehit: 3 walks, 2 hit batters, 3 steals, 3 pass balls and a sac fly.
The Astros would again not go quietly in the 9th - this time down 3. David Benda led off with a great AB, dunking an 0-2 pitch into right for a hit. After a walk and a fielder's choice, three consecutive singles tied the game. The Astros took a 5-4 lead on a groundball to third by the imposing Vertes Drew, on which the Giants could not turn a double play. In the bottom of the 9th, the Giants got 3 of their 4 hits in the game. A 1-out hit by Dylan Turner was followed by a hustle play from Ari Mukamal and a hit from Tim Vogel. A pass ball put the winning runs in scoring position and Dana Underwood delivered the game-winner.
Errorless play helped the Giants counter the Astros' outstanding pitching. Underwood's flawless shortstop, the steady work of C Xander Lowry and a catch by RF Ian Nelson with his back to the plate were the hallmarks of that effort.
